KubeEdge Initiated by Huawei Cloud Becomes a CNCF Graduated Project

Oct 18, 2024

Recently, Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) officially announced that KubeEdge has become a CNCF graduated project. KubeEdge is the first cloud native edge computing project in the industry. It is open-sourced and was donated by Huawei Cloud to CNCF. The official graduation from CNCF is a form of global recognition for the technical ecosystem of KubeEdge. It speaks to the maturity of cloud native edge computing.

Bruno Zhang, CTO of Huawei Cloud, said, "Since being open-sourced, KubeEdge has gained the attention of and support from industry partners and users alike. There have been innovative breakthroughs in industries such as smart transportation, finance, energy, connected vehicles, robotics, and logistics. The graduation of KubeEdge will further promote the cloud native digital transformation of enterprises and unleash greater value. As a pioneer and popularizer of cloud native technologies, Huawei Cloud will continue to work with CNCF and communities to promote the development of the cloud native industry."

Bill Ren, CNCF Board Director and Huawei Chief Open Source Liaison Officer, said, "Huawei has been dedicated to ICT industry innovation and solutions for many years. We have dived deep into foundational software and actively participated in and initiated open-source projects. We work with partners, customers, and developers to build communities and cultivate industry health and business success." KubeEdge is another important contribution of Huawei to the open-source foundational software field. It promotes cloud native technological innovation in edge computing scenarios and provides key support for the digital transformation of industries. In the future, Huawei will consistently engage in open-source initiatives and collaborates with global partners to foster the industry ecosystem."

Active participation in open-source projects, continuous innovation in cloud native

Huawei Cloud open-sourced the KubeEdge cloud native edge computing project in November 2018. KubeEdge allows clouds, edges, and devices to collaborate with each other in edge computing scenarios, providing users with an integrated edge-cloud synergy solution.

KubeEdge extends Kubernetes-native container orchestration and scheduling capabilities to the edge. You can use KubeEdge to manage edge applications, synchronize cloud-edge metadata, and manage edge devices. In addition, it supports continuous innovation in fields such as edge network, edge-cloud synergy AI, and edge-cloud synergy robot management. The KubeEdge community adheres to open-source governance and collaboration and develops rapidly. Currently, it has contributors from more than 110 organizations in more than 35 countries and regions.

Huawei Cloud is dedicated to promoting cloud native technologies and industry development. It has long held multiple seats in the CNCF Project Technical Committee, Governance Committee, and Maintainer, and is the only founding member of CNCF from China. In 2024, Huawei Cloud won the only TOC member seat in China (out of 11 seats total) from the world's top open source organization, CNCF.

Business implementation in multiple industries and scenarios enables industry upgrade

Huawei Cloud built Intelligent EdgeFabric (IEF), with KubeEdge as the core. IEF has been widely used in various fields, such as intelligent transportation, smart energy, smart retail, smart campus, automobile, aerospace, intelligent logistics, finance, chemical, and blockchain. With its unique advantages in the cloud native edge computing field, Huawei Cloud is highly recognized by customers and partners.

Edge computing is the key to China Tower's upgrade from traditional communications towers to digital towers. It has enabled the rapid upgrade more than 2.1 million towers in China. China Tower Field Supervision has undergone multiple phases from a concept to a mature platform. In the development phase, IEF provided heterogeneous compatibility and edge-cloud synergy to help China Tower implement edge computing and scheduling with low costs. This laid a solid foundation for China Tower to provide better public services.

Jiang Xuhui, Digital System Architect for NIO Strategic New Business, said, "KubeEdge, as a platform specially developed for edge-cloud synergy, can effectively address the challenges of cloud native technology stacks in the automotive field, challenges like a lack of compute, managing a massive number of edge nodes, and operating in different environments. After extensive research, we built a vehicle-cloud synergy platform with KubeEdge as the core. This was the first time a platform like this was used for mass-produced vehicles. It improved the development and delivery efficiency and team collaboration. Ultra-large-scale edge vehicle management is now a reality."

Cheng Panggang, owner of SF Technology edge cloud containers, said, "SF Technology has been working in the logistics field for many years. KubeEdge is a powerful assistant for us to move towards intelligence. Edge computing of KubeEdge helped us build a smarter and more efficient logistics system, from efficient logistics sorting to full-lifecycle processing during transportation."

As more enterprises use the cloud and dive deeper into the cloud, Huawei Cloud has been developing and upgrading cloud native service applications and investing in fields including cloud native Al infrastructure, serverless architecture, multi-cloud and hybrid cloud strategies, and cloud-edge-device synergy. Driven by technological innovation, Huawei Cloud builds industry-leading cloud native solutions. Huawei Cloud has ranked No.1 in China's container software market for eight consecutive times. Typical products, such as distributed cloud native UCS, CCE, serverless container CCE Autopilot, and CCI, lead the intelligent development trend of the industry and drive enterprise digital and intelligence transformation.
