22nd International conference “Mathematical Optimization Theory and Operations Research” (MOTOR2023) held on July 2-8, 2023, in Ekaterinburg, the capital of Urals, Russia, at the borderline between Europe and Asia. The conference brought together a wide research community in the fields of mathematical programming and global optimization, discrete optimization, complexity theory and combinatorial algorithms, optimal control and games, and their applications in relevant practical problems of operations research, mathematical economy, and data analysis. Our team has participated in the Industrial Section of the conference devoted to fostering cooperation between academic community and industry practitioners on solving challenging problems. Oleg Sukhoroslov from Moscow Research Center presented the talk “Cloud Resource Management Challenges” describing the problem of efficient resource allocation for virtual machines in cloud datacenters and several related challenges faced by Huawei Cloud. The improvement of cloud resource utilization requires to take into account various sources of idle resources like resource fragmentation, overprovisioning, suboptimal resource pool design and capacity planning. The related problem statements were presented and discussed with experts from academia. These statements are more complex than simple bin packing models and are not studied well in academia. Our team has already fruitful cooperation with Sobolev Institute of Mathematics on accurate lower and upper bounds from VM allocation problems and we hope to expand our cooperation to other Russian academic institutions.
