Background

Ethio Telecom is a leading force behind the Digital Ethiopia 2030 Vision and the nation's digital transformation. In recent years, however, increasing competition from new players has posed significant challenges to Ethio Telecom in maintaining the growth of its traditional businesses while simultaneously developing new ones. To stay ahead, the company urgently needs to transform itself and develop more competitive digital solutions. Powered by Huawei Cloud Stack, Ethio Telecom has built Africa's largest B2B carrier cloud, which now provides over 40 out-of-the-box cloud services. Targeting the 2G (To Government) and 2B (To Businesses) markets, Ethio Telecom has developed comprehensive SaaS offerings. Through a partnership with ChinaSoft International, it provides one-stop cloud services, covering purchase, pricing, online payment, and resource configuration, delivering a seamless customer experience. Partner SaaS applications such as ULearning, Closeli VMS, and OneOffice are pre-integrated, so customers can have easy access to all these applications. The cloud now serves over 90 customers, including core government ministries, banks, and local Internet companies, helping them accelerate high-quality growth on the cloud.

Business requirements

In the face of rising competition, Ethio Telecom, a major state-owned telecom operator in Ethiopia, urgently needs to transform itself and develop more competitive digital solutions. It is faced with the following challenges:

● More and more government and enterprise customers are looking to move their businesses and services to the cloud. However, existing virtualization architectures have a low level of automation. The cloud migration process has been slow and inefficient.

● Ethio Telecom plays a pivotal role in supporting the government's digital transformation. It needs to further enhance expertise in cloud-based big data and AI services.

● Ethio Telecom is tasked with building Ethiopia's national sovereign cloud in support of the nation's digital strategy. This cloud has stringent data security requirements. It must be deployed locally, with all data stored in local data centers.

● Ethio Telecom faces significantly challenges in helping its customers ensure a smooth cloud journey. To do that, it needs Huawei to provide technical and operational support.

Solution

Ethio Telecom has chosen Huawei Cloud Stack as its partner in building Ethiopia's national sovereign cloud and driving the nation's digital transformation. Powered by Huawei Cloud Stack, Ethio Telecom has successfully built a robust cloud platform and Africa's largest carrier B2B cloud.

Boosting Efficiency

High-performance cloud platform: CCE(Cloud Container Engine) can auto-scale in seconds, and be in response to B2B business peaks. RDS (RDS for MySQL) provides extreme performance to ensure stable operation of core business.

Extensive ecosystem

Backed by an open ecosystem and open APIs, partners' SaaS applications (for example, billing) can be quickly integrated to create a one-stop service platform covering purchase, pricing, online payment, and resource configuration, delivering a seamless customer experience. Industry-leading partner SaaS applications, such as ULearning for online learning, teaching, and examinations, Closeli VMS for video services, and OneOffice for office collaboration and video conferencing, are pre-integrated to enrich the cloud service offerings, guaranteeing efficient service delivery and easy access to these applications for customers.

Joint efforts for industry-wide cloud adoption

Ethio Telecom and Huawei Cloud worked together to build a national museum of science and technology as part of a branding strategy for Ethiopia's digital transformation and cloud adoption. They encouraged banks, Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), and Ministry of Health (MOH) in Ethiopia to move to the cloud.

Benefits

These partnerships have benefited Ethio Telecom in significant ways. For example:

● Over 90 corporate customers, including core government ministries (such as FSC, MOH, and INSA), banks, logistics and trade companies, and Internet companies, have started migrating workloads to this cloud. Ethiopia's national digital ID system has also been moved to this cloud.

● Ethio Telecom's One Cloud strategy is being steadily implemented, incorporating private clouds and CT clouds to provide a one-stop, full-stack cloud platform powering digital solutions across industries. It helps meet diverse needs from government and enterprise customers as they embark on a digital transformation journey.
